Reduce Water Usage

Tips for reducing water use during sewer pipe construction

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Residents of Carlsbad, Vista and Encinitas are asked to reduce indoor water use through Oct. 18 to assist crews working to replace a large sewer pipeline at the Encina Water Pollution Control Facility in Carlsbad. Minimizing wastewater flows between peak times, 6 and 9 a.m. and 5 to 9 p.m., is the most important.

The best way to reduce wastewater flows to the affected pipeline is to:

• Take showers instead of baths

• Take shorter showers

• Don’t use the toilet as a trash can. Flushing tissues and other trash wastes water and could clog pipes

• Only run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads

• Do laundry, take showers and run the dishwasher at non peak times (for example, in the middle of the day), when possible

Reducing water use over the next week will help minimize the amount of wastewater that needs to be diverted while the pipeline is under construction.

The Encina Water Pollution Control Facility is operated by the Encina Wastewater Authority, a public agency located in Carlsbad. EWA provides wastewater treatment service to approximately 300,000 residents in northwestern San Diego County and is owned by six public agencies through a Joint Powers Agreement. Under this Agreement, these agencies agree to share in the costs and management of EWA in order to get more economical and high-tech facilities than they could get on their own. The six owners are: the City of Carlsbad, City of Vista, City of Encinitas , Vallecitos Water District, Buena Sanitation District, and the Leucadia Wastewater District.

Install Low Flow Toilets

Install low-flow toilets and high efficiency washing machines and prevent leaks. Saving water decreases the volume of wastewater and often lowers electrical use for pumping and heating water.
